perfume oil for sensitive skin: what to look for

if fragrance and your skin don't always get along, you're not alone. here's what i'd look for in a perfume oil if your skin is sensitive, plus the honest caveats.

oil vs. spray

most sprays are alcohol-based. alcohol helps the scent project and evaporate quickly, but some people find it drying. a perfume oil skips the alcohol and carries the fragrance in plant oils instead, so it sits on your skin and moisturizes as it wears. that doesn't make an oil automatically "safe" for everyone, but it's a gentler starting point for many people.

what to look for on the label

  • clear ingredient information. if you've reacted to fragrance before, look for a full list of the base ingredients and a clear statement about what the fragrance is made of.
  • a short, readable base. simple plant oils and vitamin e are easier to vet than a long list of additives.
  • allergen notes. many body oils use nut-derived oils like sweet almond or apricot kernel. if you have a nut allergy, check carefully.
  • a brand that answers questions. if you email and ask about the fragrance, you should get a real answer, even if the exact formula is a trade secret.

how to patch test

  1. apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm or behind your ear.
  2. leave it for 24 to 48 hours without washing it off.
  3. if you see redness, itching or bumps, wash it off and don't use it.

naturally derived doesn't mean allergen-free. plant-based ingredients can cause reactions too, so patch testing matters with any new product.

a note on morning sun

our body oils are alcohol-free, with fragrance made from 98%+ natural ingredients and every other ingredient listed in full. they do contain sweet almond and apricot kernel oils, so if you have a nut allergy, please skip them or check with your doctor first. you can see the complete list on what's in it.

i'm not a dermatologist, and if you have a skin condition, your doctor is the best person to ask. questions about our formula? email me, i read everything.
